Environmental Policy

I’m committed to running as environmentally friendly a business as I can, and it’s my policy to use as little of the planet’s resources as possible. That’s easy for any company to say and not so easy to do, so here are the things I actually do to reduce my footprint.

Communication & travel

I keep travel miles to a minimum by holding meetings online or over the phone. I generally don’t take callers at my premises either, which keeps people from driving to me. In exceptional circumstances I’ll attend in person, but I keep the mileage down.

Office space

I no longer rent office space — I run the business from home. So there’s no second set of premises to heat, cool, light or maintain, and no commute, which cuts my car journeys by roughly 3,000 miles a year.

Paperless service

I no longer print documents, reports or invoices. Where something needs sending, it goes by email or a shared online service. I use paperless options from the companies I deal with wherever they offer them.

Service providers

Where I can, I use service providers that are carbon neutral or share a similar ethos to my own. For instance, where I provide hosting, I use a company running on 100% renewable electricity — sun, wind and sea. The sites I build are lean and quick anyway, which, as well as being better for the people using them, means they ask less of that electricity to load and run.

Summing up

I do what I can for the environment and weigh it in every decision I take for the business. But I’m also a realist: I know plenty of companies aren’t in a position to get anywhere near carbon neutral, and it’s not my place to tell anyone how to run their business. I’m no environmental evangelist.
